Hello,

I am doing my first triathlon this year and am wondering...

Do people change in the transition area, after the swim? or do they just get on their bike in their swim gear?

Assuming you are doing a sprint tri, then no, typically there is no changing in the transition area.  There are tri-specific shorts for men and women that allow you to swim and get right onto the bike.  Even if you are not trying to place, I am going to assume you want to get the best time you can.  Time in the transition areas is counted toward your overall time, so you want to spend as little time as you can.  But for your first one, just make sure you have a great time.  You're likely to get hooked, so be warned.

Tri shorts are worth the investment after you do your first race. They save time and are comfortable across all 3 sections of the race. They tend to wear out a little fast if you train alot, so you can pick up a couple.

I try to plan my race clothing so that i dont have to change... it costs you time.

Ski safe...

Even though I bought a tri-suit after my first few races, I'm pretty slow in transition. I can't ride without socks, nor can I handle the bike shoes already on the pedals arrangement... still I haven't come close to winning one ever, so I can live with it...
