Today marked the celebration of the first modern day triathlon with the annual Mission Bay Triathlon in San Diego, California. The original race was held on Fiesta Island in 1974 by the San Diego Track Club as a way to break up the daily training grind. The original event consisted of 5-plus miles of running, 5 miles of cycling, and 600 yards of swimming in a run-bike-swim-run format. The sport’s growth is evident when you see that the first race totaled 46 participants and today featured over 1600 competitors ranging from the elite field to a large showing of first-timers.

New participants were out in full force today demonstrating the wide array of newbie triathlon attire and bewildered looks. From beach cruisers and bikes some would consider antique, to superhero capes and string bikinis worn on the course. For me, seeing the people that are clearly first time competitors racing with a huge smile on their face is what makes the event much more enjoyable. Watching these athletes cross the finish line, I can understand their sense of accomplishment.
The day began early, just after sunrise, as the elite field got things started with a calm 500 meter swim. The age group waves would continue for the next hour and a half as the course would become engulfed with triathletes, all with the goal of enjoying the day and getting to the finish line. The bike course was less than ideal because of some overnight rain but was easily managed with just a little extra caution. A few people ended up in the medical tent afterwards for some road rash and minor cuts but from what I could tell there wasn’t any severe injuries as a result of the wet course. The run was its typical scenic course that took the athletes around Mission Bay and back to ski beach for the finish. The sun was in and out behind the clouds keeping the course relatively cool throughout the day.
Robert Skaggs came across the line first in a time of 51:02, a week after being the first overall age-grouper at the Orange County Triathlon. He was followed by Juliano Teruel and Caue Suplicy, taking second and third respectively.
