» 2008 Bonelli Park Turkey Triathlon/Trot

After gorging themselves in turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving day, hundreds of triathletes came to Bonelli park on the following Sunday for the 2nd annual Turkey Tri and Turkey Trot. The triathlon event consisted of a 1/2 mile swim, 14 mile bike, and a 4.5 mile run and was a USAT sanctioned event. The “trot” was a 10k race around the park. Races at Bonelli are notable for their relatively late starts. The 10k started at 7:30 and the first wave of the triathlon got under way at 8:20AM.

The weather was perfect for an event so late in the season. Still the water in Puddingstone lake was 60 degrees and murky which meant poor visibility while the swimmers had their heads in the water. All of the athletes found their way out of the water and to the transition to the bike. The bike consisted of two loops around the outside of the park on a mostly flat course with one good hill coming back into the park on Via Verde.

Coming out of the T2, Bryan Rocha was in the lead for the men and Henry Hagenbuch was a couple minutes behind. He kicked into high gear though and crossed the finish line before Bryan although Nick Bernal ended up with the overall win with a time of 1:20:41. For the women, Shana Strange led the way out of T2 and was the first woman to cross the finish line, however the overall women’s winner was Brigid Freyne with a time of 1:37:05.
