It was a wonderful day for the running of the 25th Annual San Diego International Triathlon. San Diego provided its typical great race weather while Koz Enterprises executed another successful event. The morning started off slightly overcast with just enough humidity to make sure the perspiration showed how hard you were working.
This year, San Diego’s premier triathlon brought out some of the big names in the sport. The men’s field included the Aussie, Luke Bell and returning champ Chris Foster. Also running was Mac Brown, 4th place amateur in Kona 2007. Mac is racing in his first year as a pro. A number of the San Diego elite competitors including Chris Prevost, Felipe Loureiro and Emilio Desoto raced as well. Emilio was out there again proving that at 48 years young he can still hang with and beat the kids. The women’s field featured Kate Major coming off a second place finish at IM Australia and Anissa Seguin, winner of this year’s World’s Toughest Half. As a special treat for the spectators, we were given a sneak preview of our women’s U.S. Olympic team with member Julie Ertel coming up from the Olympic Training Center. Joining her was her training partner at the OTC, Rebeccah Wassner, who last weekend claimed her second consecutive win at the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon.

The swim set the tone for the rest of the day. As expected a fast competitive race with everyone chasing down Luke Bell. Bell came out of the water after a stellar swim with a sizable advantage over the chase pack led by Ertel who had a monster swim of her own. The guys took off on the bike with Bell out front being tracked down by Haven Barnes and Boyd Conrick out of T1. The women were trying to catch Ertel, with Wassner and Kathryn Donovan right behind her.
Coming back into T2, Bell’s lead had been trimmed by competitors Foster and Michael Simpson. With a quick transition, Luke seemed to have control of the race; however, it was short-lived as Foster was able to run him down to take the victory with Simpson finishing third.
Julie Ertel was not able to hold the lead from her swim as Wassner came away with a “W” for the second week in a row. Ertel took second with Major rounding out the top 3.
At the end of the day Foster and Wassner claimed hard-earned victories in the pro field. The age-groupers had some great times as well. Check out some of the top finishers below.
